What is Cast Iron Borings?
Cast borings are the fine metal shavings produced when cast iron is machined, milled, or turned. They are graded separately because their handling and processing differs from solid castings. Borings are often oily from cutting fluids and must be free of steel turnings to maintain the carbon profile. High-quality borings may be compressed into briquettes (Grade 11B) for easier handling.
Tips for best price
- Drain off cutting oil before selling. Oily borings get heavy deductions.
- Keep cast iron borings separate from steel turnings. Mixed turnings get downgraded.
- Briquetted borings (compressed) command a better price than loose.
- Most common source: machine shops, engineering workshops, foundry waste streams.
