What is Cast Iron?
Cast iron scrap (BMRA Grade 10, Light Cast) covers the heavy domestic iron items pulled out during renovations. The value of each item comes down to weight: a 6-section Victorian radiator weighs 40-60kg (worth £10-£15 at the yard), a cast iron bath 80-120kg (£20-£35), a length of cast guttering 10-20kg (£3-£6), and a manhole cover 25-50kg (£8-£15). Intact period radiators and roll-top baths are often worth several times scrap value on the architectural salvage market, so check reclamation yards before weighing them in.
Tips for best price
- Weigh the salvage option first. Intact Victorian radiators and roll-top baths sell for far more restored than scrapped.
- Free of stove plates and burnt iron (oxidised by fire). Foundries reject contaminated cast.
- Keep separate from steel scrap. Mixing degrades the carbon profile and lowers your price.
- Cast iron is heavy. A single bath or a couple of radiators is enough to make the trip worthwhile.
