What is Cast Iron?
Cast iron is iron with 2-4% carbon content, making it harder and more brittle than steel. The BMRA classifies general cast iron scrap as Grade 10 (Light Cast). Sources include old domestic radiators, cast drainage pipes, manhole covers, lamp posts, and structural iron from 19th-century buildings. Cast iron commands a premium over light steel because foundries reuse it for new iron castings.
Tips for best price
- Free of stove plates and burnt iron (oxidised by fire). Foundries reject contaminated cast.
- Keep separate from steel scrap. Mixing degrades the carbon profile and lowers your price.
- Old domestic radiators are the most common consumer source. They are usually pure cast iron.
- Cast iron is heavy. Bring at least 100kg to make the trip worthwhile.
