Understanding Zinc Scrap Grades
Clean zinc (sheet, roofing) is the higher grade. Die-cast zinc (Mazak, used in handles, fittings, toys) is common from domestic sources but worth less due to alloy content.
Zinc is often found in galvanised steel coatings. However, galvanised steel is typically sold as steel scrap, not zinc, because separating the zinc coating is not economical at small scale.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is zinc per kilo in the UK?
Scrap zinc is worth roughly £0.80–£1.50 per kg in the UK. Clean zinc sheet (used in roofing, flashing) trades at 45–55% of LME zinc spot — the higher grade. Mixed/die-cast zinc (Mazak, used in handles, fittings, toys) is lower at 35–45% because of the alloy content. Less common than copper or aluminium but still worth selling.
What is Mazak zinc?
Mazak is a UK trade name for a family of zinc die-casting alloys (typically Zamak 3 or 5 — about 96% zinc with aluminium, magnesium, and copper). It’s used for handles, fittings, hinges, and metal toys. Mazak is lower value than pure zinc sheet because of the alloy content but is still recyclable.
Is galvanised steel worth selling as zinc?
No — galvanised steel is sold as steel scrap, not zinc. The zinc coating is too thin and contaminated to separate economically. Yards classify galvanised steel as light iron at the standard ferrous rate. Pure zinc items (clean sheet, Mazak, gutter parts) are graded as zinc and worth significantly more per kg.
Where does zinc scrap come from?
Common UK sources include die-cast Mazak fittings (door handles, locks, hinges), zinc sheet from old roofing or guttering, zinc anodes from marine and plumbing systems, and printing plates. Less common as a domestic-volume scrap because zinc items are usually small, but it adds up over time.
