What is Mixed/Die-Cast Zinc?
Mixed zinc is dominated by zinc die-casting alloys rather than clean rolled sheet. Common sources include door and window handles, locks, small housings, automotive components, decorative fittings, and hardware, often with chrome plating or steel inserts. Zamak alloys contain aluminium and smaller additions of other metals, so yards keep these castings separate from cleaner zinc roofing and fabrication scrap.
Tips for best price
- Remove steel screws, springs, shafts, plastic inserts, and rubber where practical.
- Keep clean zinc sheet separate; mixing it with die castings can lower the whole load's grade.
- Use a magnet to find steel cores, but remember that both zinc and aluminium are normally non-magnetic.
- When identification is uncertain, ask the yard to test the item rather than guessing from its plated surface.
