What is Mixed Stainless?
Mixed stainless is the catch-all grade for stainless items with unknown or varied alloy content. It can include mixed 300-series and ferritic solids, fabrication offcuts, and turnings, although many yards separate solids from swarf. Its return is lower than a verified 304 or 316 batch because the buyer must analyse, sort, and account for contamination before remelting.
Tips for best price
- Keep known 304 and 316 material separate and retain grade stamps or paperwork where available.
- Separate solid pieces from turnings, and drain machining fluid from swarf before delivery.
- Remove mild-steel brackets, rubber, plastic, and other attached materials.
- Do not rely on a magnet alone: some stainless grades are magnetic and worked 304 or 316 can show a magnetic response.
