What is Mixed Brass?
Mixed brass combines assorted solid brass items whose exact alloy is not separated, including plumbing fittings, taps, valves, door furniture, keys, and decorative hardware. Chrome or nickel plating is common on bathroom fittings and does not necessarily stop the underlying brass being accepted. Steel attachments, hoses, plastic cartridges, excessive solder, and other contamination reduce the recoverable brass content and can change the price offered.
Tips for best price
- Remove tap cartridges, flexi hoses, plastic handles, and accessible steel screws.
- Keep clean new rod or production cuttings separate because yards may offer them a distinct grade.
- Use a magnet to catch plated steel, but remember that a non-magnetic result alone does not prove an item is brass.
- File an inconspicuous edge on plated items: yellow metal beneath the coating indicates brass rather than steel.
