What is HMS 1?
HMS 1 (Heavy Melting Scrap) is the standard grade for heavy steel scrap, covering items at least 6mm (1/4 inch) thick. This includes structural steel, steel plate, heavy pipe, and machinery. HMS 1 must not include galvanised material. It is the benchmark ferrous scrap grade for UK export markets.
Tips for best price
- Steel prices are per tonne, not per kg. You need volume for it to be worthwhile.
- Keep separate from light iron. Heavy steel is worth more.
- Remove any non-ferrous attachments (copper wire, brass fittings).
