What is HMS 2?
HMS 2 is a prepared ferrous scrap grade covering wrought iron and steel that does not meet the cleaner, heavier HMS 1 specification. It can include thinner sections and, under common trade specifications, blackened or galvanised material. Export cargoes are often sold as an HMS 1 and HMS 2 blend, while individual UK yards may use names such as mixed iron or heavy steel and apply their own size limits.
Tips for best price
- Ask the receiving yard for its thickness and maximum-dimension rules before cutting a large load.
- Keep heavy clean plate and structural sections separate because they may qualify for a better grade.
- Remove copper, brass, aluminium, excessive rubber, and other non-ferrous attachments.
- Never include sealed cylinders, pressurised vessels, or containers with unknown residues.
