What is Aluminium Turnings?
Aluminium turnings are the small chips produced when aluminium is drilled, milled, or turned on a lathe. They are worth less than comparable clean solids because their high surface area increases oxidation and they may carry cutting oil, moisture, steel fragments, or mixed alloys. Machine shops commonly collect them as a dedicated grade, while some yards apply minimum quantities or special handling rules.
Tips for best price
- Keep aluminium swarf separate from steel, stainless, brass, and especially magnesium turnings.
- Allow cutting fluid to drain using a safe system and tell the yard if the material remains oily.
- Store turnings dry, away from heat and ignition sources, in a suitable non-combustible container.
- Do not sweep grinding dust, cigarette ends, or general workshop debris into the swarf bin.
