What is No.1 Heavy Copper?
Heavy copper (also called No.1 copper or clean copper tube) includes copper pipe, tube, bus bars, and solid copper items that are at least 98% pure. This is the most common grade from plumbing work. The copper must be free of excessive solder, paint, and other coatings.
Tips for best price
- Remove brass fittings from pipe ends. Mixed copper-and-brass gets downgraded to braziery.
- Clean off any paint or lagging. Painted pipe is accepted but at a lower price.
- Keep separate from cylinders. Copper tanks/cylinders are graded separately.
- Old plumbing pipe from renovation work is almost always heavy copper grade.
