Radiator scrap value UK
A heating upgrade leaves a stack of radiators on the drive, and what they are worth depends entirely on what they are made of. Steel panel radiators are light iron and worth a couple of pounds each; cast iron column radiators are heavy enough to matter; aluminium and car radiators are non-ferrous and paid many times more per kilo. The table prices each type at today's rate.

How yards grade radiators
Steel panel radiators are light iron, the lowest ferrous grade, priced per tonne rather than per kilo. Cast iron column radiators are the cast iron grade and go by weight, though intact period radiators sell for far more restored than scrapped. Aluminium radiators are the aluminium radiator grade. Car radiators are their own aluminium-copper grade, with brass-cored classic radiators paid as brass rads. The valves on every one are brass and worth taking off.
Getting the best price
- Drain fully and stand them upside down for an hour. Yards deduct for the water sloshing inside.
- Unscrew the valves and TRV heads. The brass bodies are worth more than the radiator they came off.
- Keep cast iron separate from steel. Mixed in, the whole pile is paid at the steel rate.
- Remove plastic end tanks from car radiators for the clean rate.
- Do not scrap an intact cast iron column radiator without checking a reclamation yard first.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a radiator worth in scrap?
A standard steel panel radiator weighs 12-15 kg and is paid as light iron, so it is worth a couple of pounds. A cast iron column radiator at 40-60 kg is worth more, and aluminium or car radiators are paid at non-ferrous rates. The table above shows today's value for each type.
Do scrap yards take radiators?
Yes. Drain them first and take the brass valves off. Most yards accept steel radiators as light iron, and pay separately for cast iron, aluminium and car radiators.
How much does a radiator weigh?
A single panel 600 × 1000 mm steel radiator weighs 12-15 kg; a double panel of the same size 25-30 kg. Cast iron column radiators weigh 7-10 kg per section.
