Boiler scrap value UK
An old boiler is a mixed lump: a steel case, a heat exchanger in copper, aluminium or stainless, some brass, a pump and a bit of wiring. Weighed in whole it is paid as light iron. Split into its metals it is worth several times more, which is why heating engineers who scrap ten a month should be pulling the heat exchangers. Values below use today's prices.

How yards grade boiler
A complete boiler is light iron, because that is what most of its weight is. The value is in the heat exchanger: copper ones from older boilers go as braziery copper (the joints are soldered), aluminium ones as cast aluminium, stainless ones as mixed stainless. The gas valve, pump body and pipe connections are brass. Cast iron back boilers and old floor-standing units are the cast iron grade and heavy enough to be worth the lift.
Getting the best price
- Disconnection is a Gas Safe job. Scrapping is not, but the boiler must be off the gas supply by a registered engineer.
- Pull the heat exchanger and sell it as its own metal. It takes fifteen minutes and is where the money is.
- Unscrew the brass valves and pump. Left on, they are paid as steel.
- Drain the heat exchanger and pump before loading.
- Boilers made before the mid-1980s may contain asbestos rope seals or panels. Do not break them up; ask the yard.
The rules
- Only a Gas Safe registered engineer may disconnect a gas boiler. Most yards will not take a boiler that still has gas pipework attached.
- Pre-1985 boilers can contain asbestos. If in doubt, leave it intact and tell the yard.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is an old boiler worth in scrap?
Weighed in whole, a combi boiler is 30-45 kg of light iron and worth a few pounds. Split into its copper or aluminium heat exchanger, brass fittings and steel case it is worth several times more. The table above prices each part at today's rate.
Do scrap yards take boilers?
Yes, once disconnected from the gas supply by a Gas Safe engineer. Whole boilers are paid as light iron; the heat exchanger and brass fittings pay more sold separately.
Is a combi boiler heat exchanger copper?
In non-condensing boilers fitted before about 2005, usually yes. Condensing boilers use aluminium or stainless steel primary heat exchangers, which are worth less per kilo but still far more than the steel case.
